Artist Theresa LaBrecque

Art is an inheritance in my family. I was one of the lucky ones in a family of six. We had two in our generation that were "chosen" to be born with the talents to create as artists. I have always considered it a "blessing" or a "calling." I never needed to ponder what I was going to grow up to be. I always knew I was an artist.

I was born into my profession. My job was to mature my gift. I also knew that I needed to be true to my calling even when the going was tough, and at times it has been very tough. My reward during these hard times was simply the art itself, rewarding me with the visions of whimsy and beauty that I felt would leave the world better than how I found it.

I fell in love with clay as a young teenager. While babysitting I would entertain the children for hours by creating their every wish with simple play dough. The look on their faces registered as if I had performed some kind of magic! Come to think of it, I guess art is a bit like magic.

When I create, I feel privileged and chosen. As I apply the many fine and delicate details with which I adorn my work, I am at my happiest. I am, in my mind, "dressing" the figures through my fingertips. Each little petal, leaf, or butterfly brings me a piece of joy, a joy that I gladly share with my collectors.

I started painting oil on canvas a couple of years ago, and I alternate painting and sculpting the same love affair of art. To those who collect my work, I would like to hope that you stop and take time to notice the details, not just in my work, but in life. Take joy in them and rest in them!
